What to look for when sourcing empty vials

In laboratory research, the container matters as much as the compound. A vial that isn’t truly sterile and pyrogen-free can introduce contamination and compromise results before the work has even started. That’s why the source of your empty vials deserves the same care as your research materials.

What are depyrogenated sterile empty vials?

They are glass vials that have been sterilised and treated to remove pyrogens, the heat-stable contaminants (such as bacterial endotoxins) that standard sterilisation alone may not eliminate. Laboratory-grade vials are typically:

  • Made from Type I borosilicate glass, which resists chemical interaction and temperature change
  • Pre-assembled with butyl rubber stoppers and aluminium crimp seals
  • Supplied sealed and ready to use under aseptic protocol
Why avoid general online marketplaces?

Large marketplaces make vials cheap and easy to find, but they aren’t built for laboratory supplies. Common concerns include:

  • Unclear origin: listings often come from third-party sellers, making it hard to know who manufactured the vials or how.
  • No lot documentation: cheap packs rarely come with certificates of sterility or pyrogen testing.
  • Inconsistent quality: glass type, stopper material and seal integrity can vary between batches with no way to check.
  • Unknown handling: storage and shipping conditions before the vials reach you are not documented.

A low price is little value if you can’t be confident the vial is what it claims to be.

What to look for when buying
  1. A recognised laboratory manufacturer with a track record in scientific supplies
  2. Certificates of sterility and pyrogen testing issued per lot
  3. Type I borosilicate glass with butyl stoppers and aluminium crimp seals
  4. Sealed, intact packaging on arrival
  5. A specialist supplier who sources directly from established lab distributors

Our approach

At Seq. Sciences, we supply depyrogenated sterile empty vials from established laboratory manufacturers, supplied with lot certificates of sterility and pyrogen testing. We’d rather you pay a little more for certainty than risk your research on an unknown source.

All products supplied by Seq. Sciences are strictly for in-vitro laboratory research use only (RUO) and are not intended for human or veterinary use.
